POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State football team continues to excel in the classroom. In the just completed spring semester the Bengal football team had a 3.16 GPA, the highest-ever, topping the 3.06 the team had in the fall.
Since
Mike Kramer was hired as head coach of the Bengal football program, the team has improved its GPA each semester. In the spring of 2011 the team earned a 2.84 and that was followed up by the 3.06 in the fall of 2011.
The ISU football program had 53 of 79 student-athletes earn a 3.0, up from the 51 of 81 in the fall and 30 of 63 student-athletes in the spring of 2011.
“The leadership of Quinton Freeman and
Don Bailey has put us in a position academically where we have become one of the most respected teams in the conference,” Kramer said. “These results are unprecedented in my career.”
A big key to the success in the class room can be attributed to the football program's academic coordinator Quinton Freeman.
“I believe our team has really shown tremendous improvement from the start of our spring 2011 semester up to now,” Freeman said. “These young men are focused on doing what it takes to become champions and this is a testament to their efforts. Our coaching staff continues to challenge them and they are answering the bell. I believe their commitment to developing these young men, not only on the field but off the field and in the classroom is evident in what has been shown to date.”
A big reason for the continued improvement in the classroom is the effort the team has put into study hall. Each position group meets four to five times a week for 1.5 hour study stable sessions with their position coach.
These study sessions also allow Freeman a time to meet with players to make sure they are on track academically. The early afternoon study sessions can be held since the team practices at 6:30 a.m. Time is also spent in team meetings talking about academics.
