Missoula, MT---Tammy Hartung scored on a corner kick just six minutes into the game and the Montana Grizzlies held on from there to post a 1-0 win over the Idaho State Bengals in Big Sky Conference women's soccer action Friday afternoon.
Hartung's goal came off a corner kick by McKenzie Zajonc. Zajonc kick went to Hartung, who headed the ball past ISU goalkeeper Shannon Boyle. That was all the Grizzlies would score and all they would need to edge the Bengals, who defeated Montana twice last season, both by 1-0 scores.
The game nearly turned in a different direction in the first minute of the game. Heather Hunt took a long free kick and put the ball into the back of the net against Sarah Braseth just seconds into the contest, but an offsides was called on Hunt, negating the goal. ISU Head Coach Gordon Henderson protested the call to no avail. Later in the half Hunt tried again to put ISU up, but hit the crossbar. The Bengals last strong scoring chance came in the second half when Jenna Jones hit the post.
"Any time we play Montana it's a close game and this was no different," Henderson said afterwards. "It was a well-played game by both sides. Sometimes the soccer Gods just don't go your way and that was the case today for us. Overall we had better chances to score, but we just didn't capatalize on them."
With the loss the Bengals fall to 6-6-1 overall on the season and 0-1 in Big Sky play. Montana improves to 5-8 and 1-0. ISU will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Cheney, WA, to take on Eastern Washington at 2 p.m. in a Big Sky match.
