Pocatello, ID---Ali Gorny posted her second straight double-double, helping the Idaho State Bengals to a 30-22, 30-28, 30-22, win over the University of Montana in Big Sky Conference Volleyball action Saturday night at Reed Gymnasium.
Gorny, a sophomore from Littlerock, CA, had 20 kills and 16 assists to lead the way for the Bengals. Gorny just missed her second straight triple-double, as she also had seven digs. Senior Amanda Meixel also had her second straight double-double with 26 assists and 11 digs. Heather Kinnison, making her second straight start had seven kills and five blocks. Jennie James had five kills and five blocks for ISU as well.
Lizzie Wertz was the lone Grizzlie in double figures with team highs in kills (14) and digs (10).
ISU was strong in nearly every category, hitting .160 compared with Montana's .030. The Bengals had 11.5 blocks compared to UM's 10 and had 49 kills compared to the Grizzlies 40.
The Bengals took a big early lead and never looked back in game one, thanks to the hitting of Gorny, who had six kills and the passing of Meixel, who had 10 assists. Kinnison had three of her five blocks in the first game as well. Game two was a back-and-forth affair with ISU finally prevailing, 30-28, thanks to seven kills by Gorny and five by Melanie Tucker.
After falling behind early the Bengals took a nine-point lead (19-10) midway through the third game and rolled to the clinching win, 30-22.
With the win the Bengals improve to 7-10 overall and 1-3 in Big Sky play. Montana falls to 7-7, 1-3. Idaho State will hit the road for the next three matches, starting with a trip to Portland, OR, to take on Portland State next Thursday at 8 p.m.
