Pocatello, ID -- Marquis Poole hit a short jumper in the lane with 29.6 left, and the Bengals survived three Westminster shots to tie or win as Idaho State ended their exhibition season with a hard-fought 53-51 win over Westminster College.
Poole's winner was set up by Idaho State's stellar defense down the stretch, which shutout Westminster over the final 7:32 of the game. Down 51-44, Rashad Kirkland hit a layup, and Jeremy Brown added a free throw to cut it to 51-47. Ray Munyagi scored two of his ISU leading 11 points to make it 51-49, and freshman David Schroeder tied it at 51-51 with 3:40 left on a pair of free throws.
From there, the teams traded possessions and shots until Poole's jumper. ISU immediately go that e ball back when Westminster stepped out of bounds on the entry pass, but Scott Henry missed two free throws, and Westminster got three looks at the basket, including a Steve Cramer three pointer that just missed. Alvin Brooks finally corralled the loose ball with one second left and ran out the clock.
Munyagi was the only Bengal in double-figures, and he also led ISU with seven rebounds. Poole had five assists, but ISU didn't shoot well, hitting just .352 from the field and only .435 from the line (10-of-23). For the Griffins, Adam Hiatt had 22 points, and Matt Sparrow added 11.
The Bengals now head to Wisconsin as they open the season on Friday against Texas-San Antonio in the Marquette Tournament at 4:30 pm.
