ISU men's basketball bounces back, defeats Coppin State behind Brown's 24 points

Nov. 23, 2002

Milwaukee, WI---Jeremy Brown scored 24 points, including seven three-point baskets as Idaho State University evened its record at 1-1 with a 63-55 win over Coppin State Saturday afternoon at the Bradley Center in the consolation game of the Blue and Gold Classic.

Brown, a senior from Phoenix, AZ, hit on 8-of-17 shots from the field, including 7-of-12 from three point range. He also had six rebounds and three steals.

"Jeremy is very capable of shooting from that range," ISU Head Coach Doug Oliver said. "And we did some things to get him some shots when he got hot."

After a back-and-forth first half the Bengals pulled away late to take a five-point lead going into the half at 28-23. The Bengals then quickly increased the lead to 10-points behind Brown's hot shooting.

"Taking the lead going into the half was huge for our mindset," Oliver added. "I thought that when we bounced it up (the lead) right away that gave us the cushion we needed."

Scott Henry scored in double figures for the second straight game with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. He also had five rebounds and three steals. Marquis Poole had eight points and eight assists. Jesse Smith scored five points and had six rebounds. His play down the stretch was a key to the Bengals success according to Oliver.

"That's what he (Smith) has to do, that's how he has to play," Oliver said. "He can dominate from seven or eight feet in. I think that game-by-game we'll see a little more of that. It's all a learning experience right now."

Senior forward Ray Munyagi, who started Friday's opener against Texas-San Antonio, sat our Saturday's game with a concussion.

The Bengals will return to action on Tuesday, November 26 when they travel to Boise to face Boise State at 7:30 p.m.
