Boise, ID--Jeremy Brown just missed the winning three-pointer at the end of regulation, and Boise State's C.J. Williams stole the ball from Marquis Poole with eight seconds left to let Boise State escape with a 74-71 overtime win, ISU's second overtime loss of the season.
The win was Boise State's 13th consecutive over ISU in the BSU Pavilion, and it was the 10th win in the last 11 meetings with the Bengals.
Boise State's Williams contributed mightily to BSU's cause with a 32-point effort, including eight three-pointers. Williams opened the overtime period with a pair of threes to give Boise State a 71-67 lead, and they would never trail again. Poole cut it to 71-69 at the 3:07 mark with a spinning layup, but ISU couldn't score again on four trips down the floor. Bryan Defares hit a layup with 47.7 left, and Scott Henry answered 12 second later. Williams then hit a free throw and missed the second, setting up the final play.
Idaho State lead by as many as 14 at 44-30 before the Broncos went on a 10-2 run to cut it to 46-40. Jesse Smith connected with Scott Henry under the basket, and then Smith hit a turnaround jumper to push the lead back to 11 before Williams' fifth trey made it 58-50 with seven minutes left. BSU tied the game with a 10-0 run at 60, and with ISU up 65-63 with 14.9 left, Solomon Wyatt hit a basket but missed the thre-point play, setting up Brown's near miss off the front rim.
Scott Henry led ISU with 15 points and Marquis Poole added 14. Danny Boticki had 13 as ISU hit .483 from the field for the game, but was done in by 11 Boise State three-pointers and 28 ISU turnovers, including six in overtime.
The Bengals head to Fresno State on Friday to take on the host Bulldogs in the McCaffrey Classic at Selland Arena. The game will mark the debut of Fresno State head coach Ray Lopes, who was an assistant for Kelvin Sampson at Oklahoma State last season.
