Corvallis, OR---Cristal Fernandez led all scorers with 25 points in just her second game as a Bengal, but turnovers doomed Idaho State in a 67-48 loss to Oregon State Sunday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
Fernandez, a junior transfer from Covina, CA, scored 12 of the Bengals first 14 points and had more than half of ISU's 48 points. She was 6-of-13 from the field and 5-of-9 from three-point range. She was the only Bengal in double figures. Ashley Toner had five points and Ashley Thurman came off the bench to score six points.
Brina Chaney led the Beavers with 18 points. Holly Chapman scored 11 points and Joline Smith had 10 points for OSU.
The Beaves forced 28 turnovers by Idaho State, while committing just 15 themselves.
Oregon State took an early 14-4 lead and never trailed in the loss, leading by as much as 22 points in the second half. A late ISU run cut the lead to under 20 points.
The Bengals fell to 1-1 on the season with the loss, while OSU improved to 3-1 overall.
ISU will continue its three-game road trip with an important appearance at the Gene Hackman Rice Invitational. The Bengals will face host Rice in the opener on Friday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. ISU will follow that up by taking on either 15th ranked Arkansas or Northwestern State on Saturday at a time to be determined.
