Boise, ID---Idaho State University turned their defense up a notch, allowing just seven points over the final 14 minutes as the Bengals picked up a big road win, taking out intrastate rival Boise State 63-49.
The Bengals, who trailed 32-25 at the half, found themselves down 42-34 after a 7-0 Bronco (3-6) run. However, from that point on, the Bengals (3-4) outscored BSU 29-7, giving head coach Jon Newlee his first road win as a Bengal. Idaho State also took the mythical state title, having defeated Idaho in the season-opener.
Ashley Toner led the way for ISU, scoring 22 points and grabbing a career-high tying 14 rebounds. Annie Anderson set a new career-high with 11 boards as ISU outrebounded the Broncos 48-41. ISU kept Boise State at bay by hitting .895 of their free throws on the night (17-of-19).
"This was just a huge win," said head coach Jon Newlee on the postgame radio show. "We really stepped it up defensively and forced them into some bad situations."
"Our girls really wanted to win this, especially for (assistant coach) Peg (Swadener) after her ordeal here last year." Swadener was Boise State's assistant coach last season under Trish Stevens, who was let go at the end of the season.
The Bengals get a short Christmas break before heading to New Mexico State on Saturday, December 28 at 7:00 p.m. in Las Cruces.
