Pocatello, ID---Julie Herdic scored a hat-trick, including a pair of first half goals as Utah held off a stubborn Idaho State rally with a pair of late goals to take a 4-1 win over the Bengals. With the win Utah remains unbeaten at 3-0-1, while the Bengals dropped to 3-2.
Herdic got Utah off to a quick start when she put a rebound of her own shot past ISU keeper Shannon Boyle for a 1-0 lead just 1:18 in to the contest. She then scored at the 30:07 mark off a Katie Battazzo pass. From there, the sides were fairly even, although Utah controlled more of the play. The Bengals mounted their comeback charge when freshman Jamie Meehan scored her first career goal on a direct free kick into the upper right hand corner of the net with just over 20 minutes to play.
With ISU trailing 2-1, head coach Gordon Henderson gambled, pushing his players up for a long Meehan throw. Utah ended up with the loose ball and was able to counter attack for a breakaway, with Herdic setting up Shauna Gurr-Bingham for a goal at the 78:13 mark. Herdic then closed the scoring less then two minutes later with another breakaway as ISU was still pushing up their defense.
"I'm tremendously pleased with our performance," said Henderson. "I thought after it was 2-0, we showed a lot of character to come back and play very well with a team like Utah."
Henderson added, "Essentially, we made four mistakes the whole game and we got punished for all four of those errors, and that's what happens when you play a side as good as they have. They deserve every bit of their national ranking."
Idaho State was outshot 20-7 on the night, but many of Utah's shots were from long range. Shannon Boyle finished with four saves for ISU, and Lynnsey Asay had three saves for Utah. Idaho State has a travel day tomorrow, and then they will take on Brigham Young at 7:00 pm on Saturday night.
