Provo, UTStacey Peterson scored a goal just 13:26 into the game and Shannon Boyle shut down the Brigham Young offense as Idaho State defeated the Cougars 2-0 in women's soccer action Saturday.
Boyle faced 17 shots, including 11 on goal, but stopped every one for her second shutout of the season. The sophomore goalkeeper shut Siena out 1-0 for her first career solo shutout on Sept. 6. 12 of BYU's shots came in the second half, including seven on goal.
"Even though we were outshot in the game, those 12 shots that BYU had in the second half, 80 to 90 percent were from 25 to 30 yards out and really didn't threaten our goal," ISU Head Coach Gordon Henderson said. "That was exactly our game plan going in."
With Boyle in control in goal it was simply a matter of getting a score on the Cougars. Peterson scored on a nearly perfect series of passes to put ISU up 1-0. Emily Hubbard advanced the ball up the right flank and sent the ball to the feet of Ashley Steel, who turned and played the ball to a racing Peterson. The sophomore from Blackfoot then put the ball into the upper right corner for the first goal.
Ilsa Gramer then put the game away for the Bengals in the 59th minute. Jenna Jones was tackled hard just outside the box, giving the Bengals a free kick. Ashley Smith served the ball into the penalty box to Gramer, who headed the ball past Cougar keeper Mandy Gott for the second score of the game.
"Any time you play a perenially ranked program such as BYU, you have to play to the best of your ability," Henderson said. "This was a big win for our program."
The win improved the Bengals to 4-2 on the season and broke a two-game losing streak. ISU will return to action on Friday, September 20, when they travel to College Station, Texas, to take on Texas Tech at 4 p.m.. They will then face eighth ranked Texas A&M on Sunday at 12:30 p.m., also in College Station.
