ISU Soccer Records Second Straight Shutout, 1-0 Over Texas Tech

Sept. 20, 2002

Box Score

College Station, TX---Shannon Boyle recorded her second straight shutout and Stacey Peterson scored her fifth goal of the young season leading Idaho State to a 1-0 win over Texas Tech Friday afternoon in the Fazoli's Soccer Classic at the Aggie Soccer Complex.

The two teams battled back and forth to a scoreless tie in the first half, with ISU taking six shots, while Tech took five.

But the tide quickly changed in the second half. The Bengals put immediate pressure on the Red Raiders, picking up two corner kicks and one shot in the first 12 minutes. Then in the 68th minute Heather Hunt took the ball into the box, took on a pair of defenders, then passed the ball to Stacey Peterson, who beat Lindsay Fish for the first goal of the game.

The goal was Peterson's fifth of the season, already the sixth highest single-season total in school history. The goal was her third game-winning goal of the season, just one off the single-season school record. That also gave her six career game-winning goals, breaking the old school record of five held by Hunt.

"Overall, it was a real grind it out type of game," ISU Coach Gordon Henderson said. "We were a little bit slow getting into the game in the first half. I challenged them at the half to step up their play and they certainly responded. I'm pleased with the fact that we won. I think that we're doing a lot of things well. Defense is the cornerstone of our team and we're playing good total team defense."

ISU improves to 5-2 on the season with the win, while Texas Tech falls to 2-3. The Bengals will take on ninth-ranked (NSCAA) Texas A&M Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in College Station.

"The team is very much looking forward to playing Texas A&M on Sunday," Henderson said. "They know it should be one of our toughest games of the season."
