Gonzaga Edges Idaho State in Women's Soccer, 1-0

Sept. 27, 2002

Box Score

Spokane, WA---Sarah Hawkins scored the lone goal of the game and goalkeeper Ashley Haugen held Idaho State scoreless as Gonzaga upset the Bengals, 1-0, in women's soccer action Friday afternoon at Martin Field.

The Bengals outshot the Bulldogs in both halves, but couldn't break through. ISU held an 8-3 advantage in the first half, but had to settle for a 0-0 tie. The scoreless tie continued for most of the second half as well, until Hawkins took a free kick that deflected off a defender and into the goal.

That would be all the Bulldogs would need as Haugen made nine saves to pick up the win. ISU's Shannon Boyle was strong in goal in the loss with seven saves.

Afterwards, ISU Head Coach Gordon Henderson was very disappointed in the loss. "This was unequivocally the worst performance in the history of ISU soccer. The players are thoroughly embarrassed by the way they played and deservedly so."

"Congratulations to Gonzaga on their win. The challenge for our team is to see how they're going to respond to this performance on the next game on Sunday against Idaho."

The Bengals fall to 5-4 with the loss, while Gonzaga improves to 4-4 on the season. Idaho State will return to action in just two days when they take on the University of Idaho on Sunday in Moscow at 2 p.m.
