Jan. 23, 2003

Box Score

Sacramento, CA---Idaho State ended a seven-game road Big Sky losing streak, but they had to endure a wicked Sacramento State comeback over the final 15 minutes, fueled by a 27-2 Hornet run to win 67-62 and improve to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the Big Sky Conference, good for third place.

Idaho State seemingly had the game in hand at the 15:00 mark when Jeremy Brown made a spot-up three pointer on a fast break for a 59-33 lead, but the Bengals would score only one more field goal the remainder of the game.

Up to that point, it had been all ISU, highlighted by a thunderous alley-opp dunk from Jeremy Brown to Alvin Brooks late in the first. The Bengals got out of the gate quickly as Marquis Poole, Rashad Kirkland and David Schroeder scored all but two of ISU's points in an opening 26-10 salvo. Led by Kirkland's 12 first half points, ISU led 41-22 at the break, but foul trouble would hurt ISU in the second half.

Jesse Smith, Ray Munyagi, and Scott Henry all had two personals in the first, and all got into deeper trouble early in the second half, opening up the door for Sacramento State.

The second half start well for ISU as Schroeder hit two more threes to give him a career-best five, pushing ISU to their largest lead at 53-26. After Brown's three, Jimmy White of Sacramento State hurt ISU inside scoring 14 points in a 22-0 run. The run was ended by ISU only basket in the final 15 minutes, a falling layup by Marquis Poole, a play on which he was fouled. The layup made it 61-55, but a Chris Lange layup and Brandon Guyton three with 2:17 cut it to one at 61-60.

However, ISU put the game away with six free throws over the final two minutes to ice the game. Idaho State committed an uncharacteristic 25 turnovers, after averaging only 11 over the past five games. David Schroeder led four Bengals in double-figures with 15 points. Brown and Poole each had 14, and Kirkland finished with 12.

Idaho State outrebounded Sacramento State 49-37, the first time in six games ISU outrebounded their opponent.
