Portland, OR--Ali Gorny had a career high 28 kills and three Bengals posted double-doubles as Idaho State won its third straight match, 30-22, 32-34, 30-27, 30-28, over Portland State in Big Sky Conference volleyball action Friday night at the Stott Center.
Gorny, a junior from Littlerock, CA, had 28 kills against just 11 attack errors for a solid .309 attack percentage on the night. She also added eight digs to just miss her 14th double-double of the season. Also reaching 20 kills for the first time in her career as a Bengal was sophomore Felice Yocopis, who had 20 and added 12 digs for a double-double. Junior Martha Brinton had 65 assists and 14 digs, as well as a .357 attack percentage. Senior Heather Gilmore had 11 kills and a team-high 15 digs.
As a team the Bengals hit .302 for the match, while holding the Vikings to .215 in comparison. ISU also outblocked the Vikings, with 11 to PSU's six.
Richell Wilson led the way for Portland State with 27 kills against just four attack errors for a .383 attack percentage. Kristin Ratzlaff led all players with 23 digs in the match.
ISU got off to a sluggish start as the Vikings took a commanding 22-16 lead in game one. But ISU regrouped and reeled off an amazing 14 straight points to win the game 30-22. ISU nearly pulled off another comeback in game two, rallying from game point at 29-27 to take the lead at 30-29, but PSU would come back to win 34-32. The Bengals then won games three and four by counts of 30-27 and 30-28.
"Obviously it's always good to get a win on the road, especially in the Big Sky," ISU Head Coach Mike Welch said. "(But) we missed a lot of opportunities on defense. We didn't control first contact very well. Even though we weren't comfortable with our flow, we got the points when it counted."
With the win the Bengals improve to 17-6 overall and 7-3 in the Big Sky Conference, just a half game behind Sacramento State, who defeated Montana State on Friday night in Bozeman, MT. Portland State falls to 12-10, 1-8. ISU will travel to Cheney, WA, to face conference leader Eastern Washington on Saturday night.
