Eastern Washington Too Much for Idaho State Volleyball

Oct. 4, 2003

Stats

Pocatello, ID--Lindsay Page and Megan Kitterman each had at least 10 kills and Eastern Washington held Idaho State to just a .049 attack percentage as the Eagles defeated the Bengals, 30-18, 30-22, 30-24, in Big Sky Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Reed Gymnasium.

Each of the three games started close, but runs by the Eagles put the games away. In game one there were six ties in the first 14 points. But with the score 9-8 EWU, the Eagles went on a 5-1 run to extend their lead to five points. ISU pulled with 17-15, but the Eagles finished the game out with a 13-3 run to win 30-18.

Game two saw four ties in the early going, but again EWU went on a run that ISU couldn't overcome. ISU led 9-5 after a pair of kills by Felice Yocopis and three Eagle attack errors. But EWU responded with a 7-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish.

The Bengals again took the early lead in game three before faltering. ISU held the lead at 8-7 and were as close as 15-14 midway through the game, but could get no closer, thanks to 12 attack errors in game three. EWU won the game three, 30-24.

Ali Gorny led the way for the Bengals with eight kills and 10 digs. Yocopis, Jennie James and Kamie Olsen all had seven kills. Freshmen Ashley VanderBloomen had 16 digs to lead all players in that category. As a team the Bengals hit just .049 with 36 kills and 29 attack errors.

Eastern Washington was led by Page, who had 11 kills and a .455 attack percentage. Kitterman had 10 kills and a .348 attack percentage. As a team the Eagles hit .237 with 48 kills and seven blocks.

"Overall it wasn't a Bengal Volleyball performance," Head Coach Mike Welch said. "That's not our normal on-court performance. We gave up some runs in games one and two. What usually has been a signature of the Bengals is being resilient. That didn't happen tonight. Chalk it up to an off night and we'll be back tough next time."

With the loss the Bengals dropped to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in Big Sky Conference play. Eastern Washington improved to 11-6 and 3-0. ISU will host Weber State on Saturday, October 11, at 7:00 p.m. in Reed Gymnasium in their next match.
