Pocatello, ID---Freshman Armine Sarkavagyan came through when it counted for the Idaho State Bengals, winning a tough three-set match to clinch a 4-3 win over Montana State, in women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center.
Sarkavagyan, a freshman from Armenia, defeated Tyffani Thomas at number five in dramatic fashion coming from behind to win, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. The win came after Montana State staged a rally of their own. After winning the doubles point, the Bobcats dropped the first three singles matches to put them on the brink of a loss. But Vera Vasileva defeated Melanie Kranz at number two, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, and Laurel Brown came from behind to defeat Kristina Arutjunova at number four, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, to tie things up at 3-3, setting up Sarkavagyan's heroics.
Eka Jvania remained undefeated in both singles and doubles with a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Stacy Voelker at number one. Hayli Scott teammed with Jvania to win in doubles and followed that up with an easy 6-2, 6-1, win over Susan Risteen at number three singles. Carol Tolsma defeated Staci Rust, 6-0, 6-2, at number six singles for the Bengals.
Idaho State improved to 3-0 on the season with the win. The Bengals will take on 54th ranked Boise State on Saturday at 12 noon at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center.
