Salt Lake City, UT---Idaho State University made a strong comeback attempt, but was unable to overcome an early 3-0 deficit and fell to the University of Utah, 5-2 in men's tennis action Wednesday at the Eccles Tennis Center.
First the Utes won the doubles point in a hotly contested doubles portion of the match. ISU's Malcolm Swan and Adam Krupp defeated Utah's Roeland Brateanu and Nick Coutts, 8-6. Daniel Lohff and Kaisorn Chaichan defeated ISU's Jemre Okoh and Chris Sadek, 8-4. The deciding point came at number two where Tyler Poulson and Tomasz Grzyb edged Hestian Stoica and Ioannis Stavridis, 9-7, to give the Utes the doubles point.
The Utes then quickly increased the lead to 3-0 after wins at number four and five singles. However in three of the other four singles matches ISU won the first set and Jemre Okoh won the second set of his match at number six, putting the Bengals in position to possible pick up the win. Swan and Stoica both continued their early success, winning their matches at number one and two. Swan defeated Brateanu, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, while Stoica edged Daniel Lohff 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. But Stavridis dropped a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6, decision to Tyler Poulson at number three and Okoh fell to Chaichan, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
ISU drops to 3-9 with the loss, while Utah improved to 6-6 with the win. The Bengals will take on Nevada on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the ISU Tennis Courts.
