Pocatello, ID---The Idaho State University men's tennis team won one of two matches Saturday afternoon, defeating Eastern Washington, 7-0, and falling to Northern Arizona, 4-3, in Big Sky Conference action at the ISU tennis courts.
The Bengals rolled in the second of their two matches, improving 7-10 overall and 3-1 in Big Sky matches. None of the six singles matches went beyond two sets, with Malcolm Swan, Ioannis Stavridis and Hestian Stoica finishing the day undefeated in singles. Chris Sadek won at number six, his first singles victory as a Bengal. Pablo Garces (#4) and Jemre Okoh (#5) also picked up wins for ISU.
In the first match of the day for ISU, the Bengals took control of a tight match early, but were unable to hold on as they dropped a one-point decision to the Lumberjacks.
Swan, Stavridis and Stoica all picked up wins in singles for ISU. Stavridis came from behind to win in three sets in his match. But ISU was unable to hold onto that momentum as they fell at the number 4-6 positions. The Bengals also started singles play in the hole after dropping all three doubles tilts.
Swan continued his strong play this week, defeating Fredrik Jeppsson, 6-3, 6-3, at number one singles. Stoica was also impressive in a 6-3, 6-4, win over Thibault Schram at number three. Stavridis edged Daniel Lunstrom, 4-6, 6-1, 4-2, at number two. Lunstrom retired at 4-2 in the third set.
Idaho State will travel to Logan, UT, on Wednesday to face Utah State in a non-conference match at 2:00 p.m. ISU will then wrap up regular season play with a match in Pocatello against Big Sky Conference foe, Montana on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
