ISU Volleyball Falls in Five Games to Cal Poly in Season Opener

Fresno, CA-- Ali Gorny led three Bengals in double figures in kills with 25, but Cal Poly rallied from two games to one down to defeat Idaho State in the season opening volleyball match for both teams, 31-29, 28-30, 28-30, 30-21, 15-12, at the Fresno Volleyball Tournament Friday night.

Gorny, a junior from Littlerock, CA, just missed her career high in kills by one, but still got her season off to a great start. In addition to her match-high in kills, she had 16 digs and a .217 attack percentage. The 16 digs was just three off her career high in that category.

Sisters Heather and Kylie Gilmore also had double figures in kills for ISU, with Heather posting 16 and Kylie getting 11. Heather set a career high for kills in the match and also had 11 digs to post a double-double. Freshman Ashley VanderBloomen, a native of California, led the Bengals with 17 digs.

The Bengals fell in game one by a 31-29 count, but rallied to pick up wins in both games two and three by 30-28 counts, putting them on the verge of a win. But Cal-Poly rallied to win game four 30-21, then edged out ISU in game five, 15-12.

With the loss, the Bengals fell to 0-1 on the season, while Cal Poly improved to 1-0. ISU will return to action on Saturday when they take on tournament host Fresno State at 2:30 p.m. and the University of New Mexico at 5:00 p.m.
