Bengals Hit Practice Field

Aug. 6, 2003

2003 Roster

Pocatello, ID---Idaho State University opened fall practice with 88 players on Wednesday, the largest and deepest roster in the five-year Larry Lewis era. The squad took the field for a 4:00 pm practice. First-year rookies conditioned in the morning and did not participate in the afternoon practice.

The roster of 88 included five quarterbacks, all of whom participated in spring practice in April. Plenty of receivers were available for the quarterbacks to throw to, including Jeff Davenport, who caught passes despite missing most of spring practice with an ACL injury.

The roster also lists 16 offensive lineman, and that includes four starters from last year, Steve Burch, Robert Poleki, David Garrett, and Jamar Ikpi. Dustin Fitzpatrick, who did not start last season, has 22 career starts under his belt to add to the solid front five.

The Bengals, who went 8-3 last season and earned a share of their first conference title since 1981, have to replace seven starters, three on each side of the ball, a NFL draftee Eddie Johnson at punter. Kyle McQuown, a freshman from Tuscon, Arizona, handles most of the punting chores during practice, and kicker Jeremy Hershey also punted as well.

Defensively, ISU lost two linebackers, Audie Attar and Bart Brooks, and will need to fill those spots. The Bengals do get back Cedrick Dawson, who sat out last season and served on the scout team.

The Bengals will hold their second practice of the fall on Thursday at 4:00 pm on the South practice field. Practices are open to the public.

NOTES: Casey Glenn, the son of former University of Montana and current Wyoming coach Joe Glenn is working in the ISU equipment room and helping with the equipment needs for Idaho State at practices. He is serving in the capacity that Nick Whitworth, ISU tight ends coach, served for the past two seasons ... graduate assistant Jason Meador, who worked with the defensive line last year, worked with the linebackers. Meador played middle linebacker for the Bengals from 1997-2000 ... talk about confusion, the Bengals have two offensive lineman named Garrett, David and Davin. They are not related. ISU also has a redshirt freshman cornerback named Jerrone Garrett ... Highly-touted recruit Michael Harris will practice with the defense. He had been listed as both a wide receiver and a defensive back .
