Pocatello, ID--Kamie Olsen and Ali Gorny each had 15 kills to help lead the Idaho State Bengals to a 30-19, 30-27, 30-19, win over the Boise State Broncos Tuesday night in women's volleyball action at Reed Gymnasium.
Olsen, a junior from South Jordan, UT, had 15 kills against just three attack errors for a .522 attack percentage. Gorny, a junior from Littlerock, CA, had 15 kills against just three errors for a .400 attack percentage. She also added seven digs and two service aces. Junior Martha Brinton, a native of Salt Lake City had 36 assists, eight kills, three service aces and six digs.
Game one was tight for the first half with ISU leading just 15-11 midway though. Olsen and Jennie James, who had 10 kills against just one attack error, each had three kills to key a 15-8 run to end the game at 30-19.
In game two the Broncos came out fast, scoring six straight points to take an early 6-2 lead. ISU started chipping away at the lead, tying the game at 10-10 and 20-20. Olsen finally gave the Bengals the lead for good with a kill to make the score 25-24. ISU then went on to win the game 30-27.
ISU came out swinging in game three as the Bengals hit .545 with 21 kills against just three errors in 33 attacks. The game was close again for the first half, but turned with the score 12-12. The Bengals had just two errors the rest of the way and outscored the Broncos 18-7, including winning the last five points, including three monster kills by Olsen to seal the victory at 30-19.
"That was a pretty sound win tonight," ISU coach Mike Welch said. "Game three we really ran away with it. That was a great finishing touch to the preseason."
With the win the Bengals improved to 10-3 on the season, surpassing their total from the 2002 season and the start is the best since the 1989 team started 12-3. ISU will return to action in nine days when they travel to Bozeman, MT, to face Montana State in the Big Sky Conference opener for ISU at 7:00 p.m.
