Cedar City, UT--Idaho State University bounced back from a disappointing weekend by scoring six straight goals to roll past Southern Utah University, 6-2 in women's soccer action Thursday afternoon at Thunderbird Soccer Field.
Southern Utah, who had scored just two goals this season going in, surprised the Bengals with a score by Amber Tubbs just 2:51 into the contest. Chantel Kim quickly tied this at 1-1 in the 11th minute when she took a past from Heather Jones on the right wing and beat the goalkeeper for the equalizer.
Shawna Park took over the ISU lead in goals with a score in the 23rd minute. Park headed a corner kick past Lyndsey Sobrero, the SUU keeper to give ISU the lead at 2-1. Jennifer Loo then gave ISU a two-goal advantage when she headed a free kick by Janel Smith into the goal.
Freshman Jessie Bobert scored her third goal of the young season just 30 seconds into the second half, while Tia Peterson added her first career tally in the 56th minute. Sarah Hobdey finished up the ISU scoring in the 75th minute with a score off a rebound in the box.
The lone negatives to come out of the loss was injuries to ISU's Stacey Allen and Janel Smith. The extent of the injuries was not know at press time, but both are expected to out for some time.
"We came out really sluggish and were punished for it," ISU Head Coach Gordon Henderson. "Overall you can't complain any time you score six goals, but as a coach, I'll play more attention to the two goals we gave up."
"Today was a very emotional day, on top of the two injuries we sustained today, we lost Stephanie Anderson yesterday. To lose three starting players in two days is going to be an interesting emotional battle for our team. Obviously injuries are a part of the game. My job now as coach is to prepare this group as best as we can heading into the most difficult part of our schedule. I've complete faith in our squad. Instead of seeing this as a negative, focusing on the three injuries, lets see this as a way for three of our players to step up. It's time to do some creative reorganization."
"On the positive side Heather Jones is creating all kinds of problems for defenses and hopefully she'll keep doing that. It was great to see Jennifer Loo and Tia Peterson score their first goals. I think that the fact the production came from so many players can only be a positive."
The improved to 4-1-1 on the season with the win, while Southern Utah dropped to 0-7. ISU will return to action in just two days when they travel to Provo, UT, to face 21st-ranked Brigham Young on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KISU 91.1 FM locally as well as on the internet by clicking on the "listen live" link on the ISU women's soccer page.
