Logan, UT--Stacey Allen scored the lone goal on a breakaway in the second half, lifting the Idaho State Bengals past Utah State, 1-0, in women's collegiate soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field.
Allen, a junior from Blackfoot, scored the lone goal on the 61:03 mark of the second half to break up the scoreless tie. ISU took just a total of eight shots, including four on goal in the game. In comparison the Aggies took 13 shots, including four on goal, but couldn't get one past Shannon Boyle, who recorded her second straight shutout.
"I think this was a good test for us," ISU Head Coach Gordon Henderson said. "Utah State played with a lot energy and played very well. I was very pleased with our shape and thought we did a good job of limited the quality chances they had. Teams will always have opportunities to score. Often times it's the quality of the chances that determines the outcome. Again I was very pleased with how we limited those opportunities."
"This weekend was a great test for our team. Not only were we playing away from home for the first time this season, but we were also playing two teams that were having their home openers, and the energy levels that goes along with that. I was also pleased that all five of our freshmen received some quality minutes in the games this weekend. Those experiences will stand them in good stead."
With the win, the Bengals improve to 3-0 on the season, which ties for the best start in ISU history with last season's team. ISU will return to action on Friday, when they host Gonzaga University, who is currently 1-2 on the season, but has a road win over Big Sky Conference member Portland State. Game time will be at 5:00 p.m.
