Portland, OR --- In a game of missed opportunities, Idaho State suffered three turnovers in the end zone, and four in the red zone overall as Portland State handed Idaho State a 42-14 loss at PGE Park.
The Bengals started Mark Hetherington at quarterback, but used Matt Hagler as the two alternated throughout the game. Among the mistakes for Idaho State came a huge one defensively early, as after forcing a three-and-out on the opening drive for the Vikings, ISU lined up offsides on the punt, giving the Vikings a first down, which they turned into a 25-yard pass from Joe Wiser to Tony Curtis.
The Bengals had a chance to tie late in the quarter, but Hagler threw the first of three red zone interceptions, this a cross field pass intended for Sale' Key. Portland State gave the ball right back, but ISU then missed a 37-yard field goal by Ryan Slack.
Portland State answered with an 80-yard touchdown drive, capped by a Joe Rubin 2-yard run to make it 14-0.
Things stayed that way until a telling third quarter, when Hetherington threw an end zone interception, and then Barnett fumbled into the end zone, although he, along with most of the players thought he had scored. However, it was ruled a fumble, and Portland State recovered at the five, and promptly went 95 yards in five plays, capped by another Rubin run.
The play turned huge when ISU mounted a fourth quarter comeback, led by a trick play. Jeff Davenport threw a touchdown pass to Sale' Key, but not before ISU was flagged for two forward passes. Larry Lewis vehemently argued the call, and after a long deliberation, the officials reversed the call and awarded ISU a touchdown.
The Bengals then recovered a pooch kick at the Portland State 39, and Davenport was on the end of a receiving touchdown from Hetherington, this a diving 13-yard grab. ISU then attempted another onside kick, but the Vikings recovered and took the short field just 44 yards for a back-breaking touchdown and a 35-14 lead.
The teams traded touchdowns after that, with Chris Seals' first career touchdown off of a 9-yard pass from Hagler accounting for the final score.
Portland State opened the fourth with another score as Hagler's pass intended for Jeff Davenport was picked off by Steve Shinen and returned 82 yards for another score and a fourth red zone.
