Pocatello, ID--Christa Brossman scored 20 points with five three-point field goals and Andrea Sivakova added 19 on 5-of-7 shooting as Idaho State defeated Southern Utah 79-69 Thursday night at Reed Gym. With the win, Idaho State evens its record at 3-3, while SUU falls to 1-4 on the season.
"We did just what we wanted to do," said ISU head coach Jon Newlee. "We wanted to win both our games at home this week before we head out on the road next week. We did a lot of good things tonight, but we still have a lot of work to do."
Although Idaho State never trailed in the game, Southern Utah kept things close through most of the contest. After taking a 38-31 lead into halftime, Idaho State improved its lead to 12, 50-38 with 17:21 remaining. The Thunderbirds couldn't get within eight points the rest of the contest as ISU took its lead to as many as 19 at the 2:42 mark.
Brossman tallied her 20 points on 7-of-14 shots from the field, 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. The senior guard also recorded five rebounds, two assists and a steal in the win. Sivakova got her 19 on 5-of-7 shots from the field, 3-of-5 from three-point range. Sivakova was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Molly Hays was the only other player in double-figures, scoring 16 points with six rebounds and four steals. Hays connected on 6-of-10 shots from the field.
As a team, Idaho State forced SUU into 22 turnovers, collecting nine steals in the process. ISU shot 40 percent from the field.. The Bengals hoisted 32 three-point field goals, connecting on 11 of them.
"We like to shoot the three," Newlee said. "We have a lot of good shooters on this team, and we'll take the three if its open."
Southern Utah had four players in double figures. Kristin Pierce led the Thunderbirds with 17 points, while Cassie Warburton added 16. Janis Beal tallied 15 points and Sarah Hutton recorded 11.
The Bengals will head out on the road for a pair next week. Idaho State travels to take on Boise State on Dec. 6, and Oregon on Dec. 9. ISU returns home for a matchup with St. Martin's on Dec. 18.
