Idaho State Soccer Wraps up Preseason Slate with 3-0 Loss to Utah at Home

Aug. 22, 2004

Pocatello, ID--Idaho State gave up one goal in the first half and two in the second as 15th-ranked Utah defeated the Bengals 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Davis Field in a preseason contest. ISU wraps up its exhibition season with a 1-1 record. ISU held its own against nationally-ranked Utah, not giving up a goal until the 38th minute in the first half. Utah midfielder Hailey Marsh headed the ball off the far post before ISU goalkeeper Shannon Boyle could reach it to give the Utes a 1-0 lead into halftime. Utah's Kim Lloyd assisted on the goal. Utah scored again in the 63rd minute of the game after the Bengals fouled Utah's Erin Pruitt in the box, giving her a penalty kick. Pruitt took advantage of the free kick, scoring on a shot to the left corner of the goal. The Ute's final score came in the 77th minute on a pass to the corner of the box from Whitney Dorsey to Julie Herdic, who then centered the ball to the middle of the box. Amanda Feight then had a clear shot which sailed off the far post and into the goal for the score. "I take a lot of positives from this game," ISU coach Mark Salisbury said. "We actually played them very evenly for most of the first half. I come away from this game knowing more about our team. That's why we play these exhibition games, to get better, and I know that this has helped prepare us for the regular season." Utah tallied six shots on the day, while recording three on goal. The Bengals had three shots and one shot on goal. The Utes also tallied five corner kicks to ISU's one. Boyle played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bengals, giving up the three goals. Utah goalkeeper Ashley Mason played 49 minutes with one save, while Glennis Donnelly received Mason, playing 41 minutes without a save. Mason was credited with the win. The Bengals will officially open regular season play this Friday, Aug. 27 at Davis Field against Brigham Young at 5 p.m. Idaho State will also host Southern Utah on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m.
