Idaho State Soccer Opens Season with 3-1 Win over Brigham Young at Davis Field

Aug. 27, 2004

Pocatello, ID--After a scoreless first half, Idaho State tallied three goals in the second half to defeat Brigham Young 3-1 in front a large crowd Friday evening at Davis Field. The game marked the first time that the Bengals and Cougars have ever met at Davis Field. The win gives ISU a 1-0-0 record on the season, while BYU begins the season at 0-1-0. "This was a great way to start out the season," ISU head coach Mark Salisbury said. "We battled hard and got better as the game went on. The expectations for our program are high, and our team understands that and lived up to it today. Now, we have to continue to get better so that we can continue to live up to those expectations." The Bengals got on the board in the 49th minute after Hollie Christensen let a corner kick sail towards the middle of the box towards freshman Ashlee Maughan, who headed into the goal. The score gave ISU the 1-0 lead. Idaho State scored again in the 59th minute when Jessie Bobert broke lose and sprinted up the right side of the field. Bobert received a pass from Ashlee Maughan, who helped commit BYU's goalkeeper towards the front of the box. Bobert's shot went into the left corner of the net, helping ISU to a 2-0 lead. Brigham Young scored just 20 seconds after ISU's second goal--the quickest consecutive goal by ISU and its opposition in Idaho State history. The previous record was set in 2000 when Sacramento State's Lisa Wrightsman scored just 42 seconds after an ISU goal. BYU's Annie Zwahlen scored off an assist by teammate Jamie Rendich at the 58:45 mark. The Bengals tallied their third goal of the game in the 65th minute when Sarah Hobdey scored off an assist from Jennifer Loo and Natalie Graham. Next up for the Bengals will be a Sunday matchup with Southern Utah at Davis Field. Sunday's game is set for 1:00 p.m. ISU will then head to Stockton, Calif., to compete in the Nike Central Valley Invitational hosted by the University of Pacific.
