Bengal Soccer Defeats Southern Utah 2-1 at Home

Aug. 29, 2004

Pocatello, ID--After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Idaho State tallied two goals in the second half to defeat Southern Utah 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Davis Field. The win ups ISU's record to a perfect 2-0-0, while Southern Utah falls to 0-2-0. "We just didn't play well in the first half and dug ourselves a hole," ISU head coach Mark Salisbury said. "But we climbed out and played like champions in the second half. We played with a lot more heart in the second half and battled hard. That hard work paid off for us in the end. It was a good win." Idaho State freshman Natalie Graham chased down a deflected ball and then shot into an open net for ISU's first goal in the 58th minute. Graham's shot put the Bengals into a 1-1 tie with 32 minutes remaining in the contest. Bengal forward Shawna Park fired a shot which sailed into the left corner of the net past SUU goalkeeper Megan Flowers in the 71st minute for ISU's game-winning goal. The ISU goal was assisted by Jennifer Loo. Chaysie Christensen scored the lone Thunderbird goal in the 7th minute of the contest, giving SUU the early 1-0 lead. The Bengals outshot the T-Birds 11-5 and also won the shots on goal 5-2. ISU tallied six corner kicks to SUU's 1. ISU goalkeeper Shannon Boyle had one save on the day in 90 minutes of play. The Bengals will now head to Stockton, Calif., to compete in the Nike Central Valley Invitational hosted by the University of Pacific. ISU will take on Nevada on Friday, Sept. 3 and then face Northern Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 5.
