Pocatello, ID--Ali Gorny recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 17 digs, while Nikki Randall added a team-high 18 kills as Idaho State opened Big Sky Conference play with a 3-2 win over Montana State Friday night at Reed Gym. The Bengals continue conference play at Reed Gym Saturday against Montana at 7 p.m.
After dropping game 21-30, Idaho State rallied to win two straight, 30-19, 30-22. The Bengals fell 28-30 in a close game four before securing the win, 15-12 in the deciding game.
With the win, Idaho State improves to 5-10 overall, 1-0 in Big Sky play. Montana State drops to 8-4 overall, 0-1 in conference play.
"We had a tough preseason schedule that has prepared us very well for Big Sky play," said ISU head coach Mike Welch. "I thought we played one of our best defensive games of the season. We hung in there, didn't give up, and came away with the win."
Gorny's tallied her 15 kills on just three errors and 47 total attacks for an attack percentage of .255, while Randall's 18 kills came on four errors for a percentage of .250. Martha Brinton led the Bengals with 31 assists, while Ashley VanderBloomen tied a career-high with 29 digs.
Megan Zanto led Montana State with a game-high 19 kills on five errors and 42 attacks. Kim Stonehouse tallied 16 kills in the effort. Kamber Kelly recorded a game-high 45 assists and a team-high 24 digs.
Up next for the Bengals will be a Saturday matchup with Big Sky foe Montana. The match will begin at 7 p.m. in Reed Gym.
