Pocatello, ID--Despite a 25 point effort from Molly Hays and 14 from Chelsey Chambers, Idaho State dropped an 82-71 decision to Big Sky Conference foe Weber State Saturday afternoon at Reed Gym.
With the loss, Idaho State falls to 7-11 overall, 2-3 in Big Sky play. Weber improves to 13-5 overall, 4-1 in league play.
With an 18-17 lead at the 12:24 mark in the first half, Weber State went on a 11-0 run and took a 44-33 lead into halftime. The Wildcats never let the Bengals get within 11 points in the second half, going up by as many as 18 late in the game.
"We're still a work in progress," said ISU head coach Jon Newlee. "We're young, inexperienced, and it shows at times. I hate to say we're a work in progress and it's almost February, but we are. We have too many mental breakdowns on defense. We are not transferring what we do in practice to our games. Our young players need to continue to get better, and they have to step up."
Hays led the Bengals with 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 8-of-10 free throws. The sophomore forward also tallied four rebounds and two blocks in the effort. Chambers scored a career-high 14 points on 4-of-5 shots from the field, including a pair of shots from beyond the arc.
Camile Michaelson was the only other Bengal to reach double figures with 12 points on 5-of-10 shots from the field.
Idaho State shot an impressive 49 percent from the field, and nearly 80 percent from the charity stripe. The Wildcats hit 56 percent from the floor and 47 percent from three. WSU hit 11 shots from beyond the arc.
Becky O'Neil led Weber State with a game-high 29 points, connecting on 13-of-16 shots from the field. She also pulled down seven rebounds. Big Sky scoring leader Julie Gjertsen tallied 16 points.
Next up for the Bengals will be a Thursday matchup with Montana State before hosting Montana next Saturday.
