Bengals Defeat Cross-State Rival Weber State 84-60 Saturday

Pocatello, ID--Slim Millien scored a team-high 19 points, while Nate Rede netted 18 and Jeff Gardner added 15 as Idaho State picked up an 84-60 win over cross-state rival Weber State Saturday night at Reed Gym. The 24 point win marks the largest margin of victory ever over WSU in a series that dates back to 1926.

With the win, Idaho State improves to 8-12 overall, 2-5 in Big Sky play. Weber State falls to 8-12 overall, 3-5 in league play.

"We knew coming into this that it was the most important game of the season," said ISU head coach Doug Oliver. "We knew that we needed to come in against our rival and play our best game of the season, and we did that tonight."

Idaho State held Weber State scoreless through the first five minutes of the contest, building an 11-2 lead at the 14:35 mark. The Bengals continued to build on the lead through the entire first half, building its lead to 21 at the half, 49-28 after Gardner hit a shot just inside midcourt at the halftime buzzer.

It was more of the same in the second as ISU built its lead to as many as 36 points, 78-42, with 8:39 remaining. WSU did close the game on a 16-2 run to get to within 24 points to close the game.

Millien notched his 19 points on 9-of-10 shots from the field. The junior center also tallied seven rebounds in the effort. Rede hit 9-of-11 shots from the field to tally 18, while Gardner connected on 5-of-8 shots from beyond the arc for his 15.

Arzelle Lewis also reached double figures for the Bengals, netting 11 points on 3-of-6 shots from three.

As a team, Idaho State connected on 64 percent of its shots from the field, 50 percent from beyond the arc. The Bengals hit nine three-point field goals. ISU held Weber to 38 percent shooting, 20 percent from three-point range.

Terrell Stovall led the Wildcats with a game-high 20 points. Coric Riggs added 12 points for Weber.

The 24-point win also marks the largest margin of victory this season for the Bengals, who ride a two-game conference win streak into Montana next week. ISU travels to play Montana State on Feb. 3, and Montana on Feb. 5. Both games will be aired live on Altitude Television.
