Pocatello, ID--Sacramento State put in a quick first period goal and then another in the second to shutout Idaho State 2-0 Thursday afternoon at Davis Field in Pocatello.
With the loss, Idaho State falls to 4-11-1 overall, 1-3-1 in Big Sky play. The win secures a spot in the upcoming Big Sky Conference tournament, and improves the Hornets' record to 8-6-3 overall, 4-0-1 in league play.
"This was difficult to watch today," said ISU head coach Mark Salisbury. "We had numerous chances, especially in the first half. I thought we controlled most of the first half, but could put anything in."
Sacramento State scored early in the sixth minute of the game after Tiffany Fraser dribbled down the right side of the field and put in a shot over the head of ISU goalie Esther Toronto from about 20 yards out.
The Hornets secured the victory when Katie McCoy found a rebounded Kayelyn Satkowski shot and put it in the goal at the 63:23 mark in the second half. The goal is McCoy's seventh of the season.
Idaho State tallied nine shots, three on goal, while Sacramento State recorded eight shots, four on goal.
Jennifer Loo led the Bengals with four shots, two on goal. Five other Bengals recorded one goal. Satkowski and Fraser led the Hornets with two shots each.
Toronto recorded two saves with the two goals allowed for ISU. Jenny Lawrence led the Hornets in goal, notching three saves for her fifth shutout of the season.
Idaho State will close out regular season play against Northern Arizona on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Davis Field. The game marks `senior day' for outgoing ISU seniors Ashli Kimenker, Carlie Tobiason, Stephanie Anderson, and Toronto. Game time is set for noon.
"NAU's a good team," Salisbury said. "They play a system that's hard to play against. It will help to have Ashli (Kimenker) back in the lineup, and I expect a competitive game."
With the fourth and final Big Sky Tournament spot still up for grabs, Idaho State will need a win on Saturday against Northern Arizona to keep its tournament hopes alive.
