Pocatello, ID -- Chantal Kim took some pressure off of her teammates shoulders when she scored ISU's only goal of the game to tie the score with Portland State at 1-1, but the pressure would soon return as the Friday evening match went into double overtime.
Portland State's Salina Karia put the Vikings on the scoreboard first with her 76th minute goal off of a long pass from Kari Otani. The Vikings racked up 18 shots with nine shots on goal.
With the Vikings ahead late in the game Idaho State's Kim tied up the score with a pass from Kilee Quigley in the 81st minute. The Bengals only needed four shots and one shot on goal to bring the game to a tie and force overtime.
After the first overtime period ended scoreless the game was forced to go into double overtime. Goalkeeper Esther Toronto recorded one save in the first overtime and two in the second overtime period. Toronto tallied eight saves throughout the game while PSU's goalkeeper Niki Brooks had no saves for the night.
"Esther played remarkable, she had some huge saves," said Coach Mark Salisbury of his senior goalkeeper. "The back three Ashli (Kimenker), Kilee (Quigley), and Kalie (McGuire) played great also and Chantal (Kim) scored for the second game in a row."
"I'm very proud of how the team battled through and came back, it's the first time all year we've come back," said Salisbury of his team. "Portland State is an incredibly tough place to play and they train on the turf all year, but our team was tough and hung on."
The Bengals tie game against Portland State was their first Big Sky Conference match-up of the season and a great start to conference play.
"Portland State was picked to win the conference and for us to play how we did against them was big," said Salisbury. "We host Weber State next week and if we can get a win it would be a huge start for our conference season."
The Bengals return to action when they take on the Weber State Wildcats Saturday, October 15 at 1 p.m. at ISU's Davis Field.
