Pocatello, ID --- Idaho State rode the hot hand of David Schroeder, who scored 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and got a third straight double-double from Slim Millien as the Bengals cruised past Utah Valley State 72-56 in non-conference action on a snowy night at Reed Gym.
The Bengals (2-1) never trailed in the contest, and Utah Valley State (2-3) never got within 10 points after the 11:21 mark of the first half when a Tim Henry three-pointer made it 15-5. Schroeder, a senior, scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half in leading ISU to their first Division I win of the year.
Millien, who came into the game averaging 22.5 points per game, netted just 13 on 6-of-12 shooting, but he threw down three more dunks, and added 10 rebounds for his third straight double-double. Last season Millien had just two all year. Millien's 10 rebounds paced a strong effort on the glass as the Bengals outrebounded UVSC 41023, including a 22-9 margin in the second half
"I didn't even realize during the game that we were dominating on the boards so much, said Doug Oliver. "One of the things we stressed is that although this game was going to be a half-court game because that's what Utah Valley does, we were going to try to run a bit and press the ball up the court. I think we are starting to understand what we need to do to be successful."
The Bengals hit just six three-pointers on the night, but ISU shot .448 from the field for the game, and .737 from the line.
"It completely shocked us when they went to the zone because they hadn't played it this season, but other than one bad shot I thought we handled that well," said Oliver.
The only other Bengal in double-figures was Tim Henry, who added 12. Akbar Abdul-Ahad had a team-high five assists off the bench. Millien had four blocks for the fourth straight game. Utah Valley State was led by Matt Peterson, who scored 16, and Tika Wesley, who scored 11.
