Fargo, ND --- The halftime deficit wasn't nearly as large, but North Dakota State held off Idaho State after another second half comeback, and the Bison pulled away from the Bengals late, ending Idaho State's winning streak at six games as ISU lost 86-69.
ISU opened the game well, scoring the first seven points, and led 24-19 at the 10 minute mark of the half before NDSU went on a 23-13 run over the final 10 minutes for a 42-37 lead at the break.
The Bengals came out on fire in the second half, as David Schroeder scored all 12 of his points in the opening 5:05 of the half, the last of which tied the game at 52 all. Schroeder however left the game moments later with a hip injury, and head coach Doug Oliver opted to hold him out for the remainder of the game.
"It hurt losing David because he was getting into a rhythm and he was guarding Woodside well," said Oliver. "The one thing we've done the last six games is play hard and we've matched the effort level of our opponent, and we didn't do that tonight."
NDSU took the lead for good with a 7-0 run, and by the time Tim Henry answered that run with a layup with just over 12 minutes left, ISU would get no closer.
Idaho State hurt themselves from the free throw line, hitting just 11-of-20, and ISU was outrebounded 43-29, their worst rebounding effort since the opener at Kansas.
Said Oliver, "I'm disappointed that in the second half we battled back to 52 all, but from that point on, NSDU got to every loose ball and every rebound, and that's the first time that's happened this year. They outplayed us over the last eight minutes of the game."
Ben Woodside, who had 32 in the overtime loss to Idaho State two weeks ago, again scorched ISU, this time with 29 points. Along with Millien's 20, Tim Henry added 18 and Schroeder 12.
The Bengals now get a 10-day layoff before returning to the court on December 27 against Rocky Mountain at Reed Gym at 7:05 pm. ISU then heads to Logan to face Binghamton in the first round of the Gossner Foods Classic at Utah State on December 29th at 5:35 pm.
NOTES: Nicholas Rhodes, who sprained an ankle in the opener against Kansas, returned to action, playing five minutes ...
