Poor First Half Dooms ISU in 80-63 Loss at Montana

Feb. 5, 2005

Final Stats

Missoula, MT -- Idaho State's offense deserted them in the first half as the Montana Grizzlies went on a 30-7 run over the final 11:20 of the first half to give themselves a 25-point halftime advantage on the way to a 80-63 win in Dahlberg Arena. ISU shot just .222 in the opening stanza, while Montana hit at a .517 clip.

The Bengals suffered through a 1-for-16 stretch over the major portion of the run, punctuated by a missed dunk and technical foul on Logan Kinghorn, although he was much of ISU's offense in the first half, scoring 50% of ISU's points, hitting for 11 of their 22. He ended up being much of ISU's offense for the night.

Where ISU struggled mightily was inside the paint, where ISU's posts were just 1-for-13 in the first half. The Bengals kept it close early on, and an Arzelle Lewis three-pointer with 11:20 to go put the Bengals down 17-15, but Montana scored nine straight, and 21 of the next 23 points to go up big in the first half.

The Bengals did come out strong in the second half, and battled throughout, although they never got closer than 14 late. Logan Kinghorn had the best night of his career, hitting three triples and racking up a career-high 32 points. Kinghorn scored 27 against Northern Arizona earlier this year, and he has scored 123 in the last seven games after scoring 101 in his first 15. Kinghorn scored 23 in the second half, but he was the only Bengal in double-figures. Jesse Smith grabbed a game-high eight boards, while Montana's Jon Seyfert had nine.

Montana had three in double-figures led by Kamarr Davis, who scored 20. Montana won the board battle by one 38-37.

Notes: Jeff Gardner tied Erin Cowan for the ISU career-record for three-pointers when he hit his only one early in the second half. He now has 128. Gardner did become the all-time three-point attempts leader with four attempts in the first half ... Kinghorn's 34 points tie for the 42nd-most in school history, and it was tied for the second-most in the Doug Oliver era, behind the 37 point that Jeremy Brown scored at Portland State on February 23, 2002.
