Aug. 28, 2005

Box Score

Pocatello, ID--Idaho State gave up two first period goals and managed just one shot on goal as Gonzaga took a 2-0 win Sunday afternoon at Davis Field. The loss drops ISU to 0-2-0 on the season, while Gonzaga improves to 2-0-0.

"We dug our grave early and then stopped working and playing," said ISU head coach Mark Salisbury. "As soon as we gave up those first two goals we stopped attacking."

Gonzaga got on the board early, scoring at the 7:05 mark when Cristin Leverson received a pass in the middle of the box from Christine Soma. Leverson kicked the ball off ISU keeper Maren Eves' hands and into the back of the net for the score.

The Zags recorded another goal just six minutes later at the 13:49 mark. Soma was on the receiving end this time as Heather Horn made a nice half field lead pass to a sprinting Soma, who outran the ISU defense and put a shot past Eves for the goal.

"We took a step back today," Salisbury said. "We can't get down on ourselves because we're 0-2 now. We have to work harder in practice this week and get better. We have to be positive going into the California road trip next week."

The Bengals managed just four shots on the day, one on goal by Michelle Okumura. Jennifer Loo fronted the team with two shots, while Jenny Ford and Okumura each recorded one.

Gonzaga tallied 11 shots, eight on goal. Horn led the Zags with a game-high three shots, while Jamie Blanche added two.

Eves played the first period in goal for ISU, recording two saves and two goals allowed. Lyndsay Gensler replaced Eves and played the entire second half without giving up a goal. Gensler recorded four saves in the effort.

Ashley Haugen played all 90 minutes in goal for GU, tallying one saves without allowing a goal.

Idaho State now travels to California next week for a pair of games. The Bengals will take on Long Beach State on Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. before playing Cal State Northridge on Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
