Denver, CO--Three players recorded double-digit kills as Idaho State blanked host Denver 3-0 at the University of Denver Classic Saturday morning in Colorado. The Bengals will continue play at the Classic tonight against Jacksonville at 5 p.m.
Idaho State took the 3-0 shutout, 30-26, 34-32, and 30-26. The win pushes Idaho State's record to 3-5 overall, while Denver falls to 3-4.
"It was a big win over a great team," said ISU head coach Mike Welch. "Denver convincingly beat Jacksonville last night and upset Colorado State the match before that. I was proud of the way our team came together. It was a complete match for us."
Felice Yocopis led the Bengals with a match-high 21 kills with just four errors on 49 attacks for a .347 average. The senior outside hitter records her eighth-straight double-double in as many matches with 11 digs. Nikki Havens helped the effort with 13 kills and eight digs, while freshman Jessica Gurney recorded a 12 kill effort with only one error on 20 attacks.
"Jessica had a big match for us today," Welch said. "It really helps when someone else can step up and take some of the load off of Felice and Nikki."
Lisa Bushman fronted the Bengals offensive attack with a career-high 45 assists. The junior setter also notched six digs and a service ace in the win. Katie Hurst, playing at the libero position for the first time this season, picked up a team-high 16 digs.
The Bengals will continue play at the Classic tonight at 5 p.m. as the team takes on Jacksonville. ISU returns home for a matchup with in-state rival Boise State on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
