Pocatello, ID--After scoring on an own goal in the first period, Idaho State's Lacey Pearson and Jenny Ford each found the back of the net in the second period to help the Bengals to a 3-1 victory over in-state rival Idaho Sunday afternoon at Davis Field.
The win ups ISU's record to 2-4-0 on the season, while Idaho falls to 2-3-0. The victory also marks the first win for ISU over the Vandals since the 2000 season.
With the win, ISU improves to 1-0 in Governor's Cup matches this season. The Bengals will continue Governor's Cup play at Boise State on Sept. 21.
"This was a fun one to win," said ISU head coach Mark Salisbury. "It was the first time that any of the players on our team have beat Idaho. It was our best 90-minute effort of the season. Idaho is a good team and we knew that we would have to playa complete game and we did that today."
Idaho State was first to get on the scoreboard when Idaho's Mandy McAlexander headed an ISU pass into its own goal in the 40th minute. The goal marks the first time in Idaho State history that the team has scored on an own goal.
The Vandals evened things up just two minutes later in the 42nd minute. UI's Sonja Baumgartner found the back of the net off a pass from Aly South to tie things up at 1-1 at the half.
The Bengals struck again at the 54:44 mark when Lacey Pearson scored an unassisted goal for her second of the season. Pearson fought for the ball in the middle of the box before putting it past UI keeper Lindsay Smith.
ISU secured the match in the 81st minute after Chantal Kim broke away from the pack at the middle of the field. Kim made a long pass down the middle of the field to Jenny Ford, who then put her first score of the year into the back of the net to give ISU a 3-1 advantage.
"I'm really proud of both Lacey and Jenny," Salisbury said. "Lacey has worked so hard to come back from her ACL injury, and Jenny battles out there every single game. They both deserved the goals, they worked hard for them."
Esther Toronto started her second-straight match in goal for ISU, collecting six saves with just the one goal allowed. ISU's defense limited the Vandals to 11 shots on the day, seven on goal.
Idaho State now heads out on the road for three straight. The team will travel to Cedar City, Utah to take on Southern Utah on Sept. 15 before heading to Logan to face Utah State on Sept. 17. The next home game for ISU will be a Sept. 25
