ISU Soccer Falls 5-0 at Cal State Northridge

Northridge, CA--Idaho State gave up three goals in the first period and two more in the second to take a 5-0 loss to Cal State Northridge Sunday morning at the Matador Soccer Field in Northridge, California.

The loss drops the Bengals to 0-4-0 on the season, while Cal State Northridge improves to 3-1-0.

The Matadors first got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute when junior forward Tessa Binkley found the back of the net off an assist from Kaitlyn Kelly. CSN scored again in the 22nd minute when Kelly found herself on the receiving end this team from Brianna Monka at the 22:52 mark for the score. Sophomore midfielder Mary Ortega scored the third goal of the first period for the Matadors when she received a pass from Leila Pate in the 27th minute for the goal.

It was more of the same in the second period as Cal State Northridge's Nalina Betancourt put in a score off an assist from Binkley. Binkley scored her second goal of the game at the 67:44 mark on an assists from Devon Nizich to put the Matadors up 5-0. Binkley finished the game with an impressive five points.

ISU's Chantal Kim, Michelle Okumura, Jana Davis, and Kilee Quigley each led the Bengals with two shots each. Stephanie Anderson, Kim, Okumura, and Quigley each had shots on goal.

Idaho State was able to get off 11 shots to CSN's 17. The Bengals had four shots on goal, while the Matadors tallied nine.

The Bengals used three keepers in the match. Maren Eves spent the first period in goal for ISU, collecting three saves with three goals allowed. Lyndsay Gensler replaced Eves to start the second period, tallying one save with two goals allowed. Esther Toronto replaced Gensler to play the final 17 minutes with a save and no goals allowed.

The Bengals have given up five goals just two times prior to today's loss--a 0-5 loss at Portland in 2001 and a 0-6 loss at Texas A&M in 2002.

ISU returns home for a pair of games next week at Davis Field. The Bengals will host Utah Valley State on Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. ISU will then host in-state rival Idaho in a Governor's Cup match on Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
