Final Stats
Pocatello, ID --- Most people thought with two run-and-gun teams like Idaho State and Sacramento State, the last team with the ball was going to win, and that's exactly what happened. Sacramento State's Alex Bausley hit a 10-foot baseline jumper with no time left to answer a long three-pointer from Akbar Abdul-Ahad with 14.4 to go, and Sacramento State defeated Idaho State in a scorefest 107-106.
Last year, the Hornets beat the Bengals 99-97 in overtime when Jason Harris sank a layup with no time left that teasingly rolled around the rim twice before going down. That was Sacramento State's first ever win in Pocatello.
The Bengals looked to have the game won when David Schroeder threw down a dunk with 57.7 seconds left, and then he added two free throws with 42.0 seconds left to make it 103-99. However, Bausely drained a three from the top of the key with 33.4 left to make it 103-102, and then Tim Henry got trapped in the corner. He tried to pass to Logan Kinghorn, but Davon Roberts got a hand on the ball, and DaShawn Freeman saved the ball, fed it to Clark Woods, who drained another three, this with 26.6 left for a 105-103 Hornet lead.
The Bengals answered though when after a timeout, Abdul-Ahad got the ball, dribbled left and nailed a 23-footer for a 106-105 lead with 14.4, setting up Bausley's final shot.
The Bengals trailed by 11 at the break 55-44, and eventually scored 62 in the second half, as ISU ripped the nets, shooting .647 for the game, .533 from the three-point line, and .865 from the free throw line. ISU had six player in double figures, led by a career-high 31 point night from Slim Millien. Abdul-Ahad also had a career-night with 18 points, and Kasey Winters had his career-best with 16 points. David Schroeder had 13, Tim Henry 12, and Logan Kinghorn 11.
However, the Bengals struggled to stop DaShawn Freeman, who had a 27-point, 12 assist double-double, and five steals, including the key one at the end of regulation. Bausley was 8-for-9 from the field for 22 points, as Sacramento State also torched the nets, hitting .559 from the field. Sacramento State also hit 14-of-26 from the three-point line, and they shot .810 from the free throw line.
Idaho State outrebounded the Hornets 34-19, including an amazing 21-4 in the second half.
The Bengals (7-7, 0-3 Big Sky) dropped their first home contest of the season, and they face Northern Arizona, who is 11-6, 3-0 in the Big Sky on Saturday at 7:05 pm. Sacramento State (12-6, 3-0 Big Sky) travels to Weber State the same day.
NOTES: The game marked the first time in ISU's history that the Bengals lost a home game when scoring 100 points. They were 42-0 at home when that occurred ... the 213 points was the most since February 6, 1992, when ISU and Montana State combined for 216 in a 115-101 Bengal win ... ISU dropped to 0-3 in January ... ISU's .647 field goal percentage was just off the record of .707 set back on March 5, 1987 against Boise State (29-for-41) ... ISU started 0-5 last season in the Big Sky.
