Pocatello, ID--The Idaho State men's tennis team opened its season with a 4-3 win over Utah State Wednesday afternoon at the Reed Gym tennis courts. The Bengals picked up the double's point before winning three of the six singles matches to secure the victory.
Pablo Garces and Alex Danilkovich teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Utah State's Joao Pinho and J.J. Netto 8-5. Playing at No. 3 doubles, Ryo Sakamoto and Brian Richman combined to defeat USU's Bryan Marchant and Jonas Tyden 9-8.
Marc Pijoan, playing the No. 1 spot, picked up ISU's first singles point, defeating Johannes Zelle in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Danilkovich got past Netto at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Masimba Ruwo secured the match for the Bengals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Utah State's Dantley Young at the No. 4 position.
ISU will continue play on Saturday when the team hosts Big Sky foe Northern Arizona at 1 p.m.
