Pocatello, ID--Despite a 22-point, 11-rebound double-double effort from Natalie Doma and four other Bengals reaching double figures, Idaho State dropped a 93-80 decision to Portland State Saturday afternoon at Reed Gym. The loss drops the Bengals to 8-10 overall, 2-2 in Big Sky play. Portland State improves to 7-9 on the season, 1-2 in league play.
"The effort wasn't there today," said ISU head coach Jon Newlee. "I think we were too confident after our win over Eastern Washington on Thursday. We didn't come ready to play today, and it showed."
After trailing by just two points, 48-46, at the half, Portland State built a 12 point lead halfway through the second half. ISU could never recover as the Vikings continued their run, going up by as many as 15 at one point.
"We never matched their intensity," Newlee said. "We were flat, didn't take care of the ball, and committed too many turnovers."
Doma collected her 22 points on 8-of-19 shots from the field, including a 5-of-6 clip from the free throw line. The sophomore center also tallied two assists, one block, and a steal. Jeni Boesel helped ISU with 16 points, while Danica Boyce and Andrea Lightfoot each added 13. Jenna Brown rounded out the scoring with 11 points off the bench.
Heather Arns led Portland State with 28 points and nine rebounds. Kelsey Kahle chipped in 18, while Brianna Thompson added 17. Sharon Wahinekapu came off the bench to help PSU with 16 points.
As a team, Idaho State connected on 42.6 percent of its shots from the field compared to PSU's impressive 55.2 percent shooting. The Bengals out-rebounded Portland State 35-31.
ISU now heads south to take on cross-state rival Weber State on Jan. 26. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m.
