16th-Ranked Utah Defeats Idaho State 3-0

Pocatello, ID--Idaho State stepped out of Big Sky play Tuesday night to take a 3-0 (21-30, 21-30, 28-30) loss to 16th-ranked Utah at Reed Gym. The loss drops the Bengals to 7-12 overall, while Utah improves to 13-2.

"Utah is a very good team but I thought we held our own against them," said ISU head coach Mike Welch. "We felt confident coming into the match and we still feel confident after the match. If anything, tonight was a great preparation match heading into the rest of Big Sky play."

Freshman Emily Waldron led the Bengal attack with a team-high seven kills. Jessica Gurney helped with six kills, while Cory Farnsworth and Karli Maughan each added five. ISU kill leader Nikki Havens was held to four kills on the night.

Christine Collette guided the Bengal offense with a match-high 30 assists. She also added a pair of service aces to go along with four kills and nine digs. Senior Bri Beal led the defensive effort with a match-high 16 digs.

As a team, ISU managed 35 kills on 121 attacks while hitting .107. The Utes connected for 53 kills on 124 attacks for a .254 attack mark. The Bengals won the digs battle 50-49 while Utah out-blocked ISU 10-6.

"I thought we won the serve and pass game tonight," Welch said. "We also out-dug them, which was something to be proud of."

Utah outside hitters Airial Salvo and Whitney Webb led the Utes with 12 kills each. Emillie Toon also reached double-digit kills with 10.

Idaho State jumps back into Big Sky Conference play as the team hosts Northern Arizona on Thursday night. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
