Box Score

Provo, UT--Idaho State opened its season with a 73-50 loss to No. 24 Brigham Young in the first round of the Preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament Friday night at the Marriott Center.

After playing to a 9-9 tied five minutes into the game, Brigham Young used a 13-2 run to take a 22-11 lead with 9:34 remaining in the first half. The Bengals then cut the lead back to seven points with nine minutes to play, but BYU countered with back-to-back shots from long range to extend the lead to 13 points. The Cougars closed out the half with a pair of free throws and a shot at the buzzer to take a 42-25 lead into the half.

The second half was a little tighter as the Cougars only out-scored Idaho State by a 31-25 margin.

"I was disappointed with out effort tonight," said ISU head coach Jon Newlee. "We played on our heels and never got into a good flow. I think this is a good wake-up call for us. I think we know exactly what we have to work on to get better. We have a lot of new players and there's going to be a big learning curve for our younger players."

Natalie Doma led the Bengals with a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double. The junior center connected on 6-of-19 shots from the field in 30 minutes of play. Andrea Lightfoot added nine points on 4-of-8 shooting. Jeni Boesel added seven points and Oana Iacovita helped with six.

The Cougars won the battle of the boards 48-36 and scored 32 points in the paint to ISU's 16. BYU connected on nine shots from beyond the arc while connecting on a 45 percent clip from long range. The Bengals hit 3-of-16 shots from long range for an 18 percent mark.

Shawnee Slade led Brigham Young with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, while Mallary Gillespie added 10 points.

With the win, BYU moves on to play Stanford on Monday night in California. The Bengals continue road play on Nov. 17 at Utah State. The Bengals next return home for a Nov. 28 matchup with Wyoming.
