Nov. 9, 2006

Box Score

Salt Lake City, UT--Leading 2-1 with just 30 seconds to play in regulation, Idaho State was called for a foul in the box and Utah took advantage with a made penalty kick to tie the game at 2-2. The Utes then scored in the second overtime period to take a 3-2 win over the Bengals Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA College Cup at Ute Field.

"It's a tough way to lose a game," said ISU head coach Allison Gibson. "I thought we had out-played them and had the game won. It doesn't take anything away from the incredible season that our players have had. They have worked so hard and have accomplished things that no one thought they could. They proved a lot of people wrong this season. I'm very proud of our effort. We'll be back again."

Idaho State ends its season with a 10-9-1 overall record. The 11th-ranked Utes improve to 16-4-1 on the season and advance to take on defending national champion Portland in the next round of the tournament.

Idaho State was first to get on the scoreboard when Michelle Okumura took advantage of a Jenny Ford cross into the box and put the ball in the back of the net to give the Bengals a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. The goal marks the first-ever score in four NCAA College Cup appearances for the Bengals.

Utah answered in the second period when Adele Letro took a cross and shot it from ten yards out and into the goal in the 50th minute. Okumura then countered with her second goal of the game in the 67th minute to give the Bengals another one goal advantage at 2-1.

With just 30 seconds to play the Bengals held on to a 2-1 advantage when an ISU defender and a Utah forward collided in the box. A foul was called and Utah received a penalty kick, which Katy Reineke put into the left side of the net to tie the game and send it to overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, Utah's Amanda Feigt managed to kick a ball towards the goal and over ISU keeper Lyndsay Gensler for the game-winner.

Gensler had a career night for the Bengals, collecting a career-high 15 saves in 103 minutes of play. Okumura led Idaho State with four shots, three on goal. Jennifer Loo helped with three shots with one on goal. Natalie Graham and Kilee Quigley each recorded two shots.

Utah had shutout 10 of its last 11 opponents before the Bengals recorded two goals on Thursday night. Idaho State is the only team this season to record two goals on Utah.
