Pocatello, ID--Andrea Lightfoot and Natalie Doma each recorded double-double efforts as Idaho State defeated Sacramento State 75-60 Saturday afternoon at Reed Gym. With the win, Idaho State moves into second place in the Big Sky standings with a 6-3 mark.
The Bengals improve to 12-11 overall, 6-3 in league play, while Sacramento State falls to 8-13, 3-6 in conference play.
"This was by far our best defensive effort of the season," said ISU head coach Jon Newlee. "We did a great job of getting to their shooters and hitting the boards. Everyone was involved today. It was a total team effort with everyone contributing."
With a 23-16 lead and just five minutes remaining in the first half, Idaho State used a 16-6 run to close out the first period of play with a 39-22 lead. The Bengals then extended their lead to as many as 24 points with under five minutes to play in the game, but a small Hornet run cut the Bengal advantage to 15 points as time expired.
Lightfoot led the Bengals with a game-high 17 points, which included a career-high 12 rebounds for her first career double-double. The sophomore guard also collected three assists and a pair of steals in the effort. She connected on 6-of-18 shots from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 mark from the free throw line. Lightfoot also recorded a pair of shots from beyond the arc.
Doma recorded her second straight double-double and sixth overall with a 13-point, 10-rebound effort. Doma recorded a 6-of-19 clip from the field, and was 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.
Along with Lightfoot and Doma, three other Bengals tallied double-figure efforts. Joanna Hixon tallied 13 points while Danica Boyce and Michelle Grohs each added 11. Hixon also added eight rebounds with two assists and a steal. Senior Ali Gorny scored the first two points of her career in the contest.
"It's nice to see everyone get involved," Newlee said. "We had five players reach double-figure scoring, which shows me everyone is contributing. We don't have to just depend on Andrea and Natalie for out scoring. Everyone on the team is capable of scoring, and we showed that today."
The Bengals shot 35 percent from both the field and beyond the arc while holding Sacramento State to 29 percent shooting from the field and 17 percent from long range. Idaho State out-rebounded Sacramento State 54-47, including a 19-18 advantage on the offensive boards.
Idaho State, which has won four of its last five games, heads out on the road next week. The team will travel to Portland State for a Feb. 16 matchup before heading to Eastern Washington on Feb. 18. ISU will then return home to play its final three games, beginning with Weber State on Feb. 23.
