Final Stats
Orem, UT - Akbar Abdul-Ahad hit two free throws with 0.8 left, and Utah Valley State got a meaningless layup at the buzzer as the Bengals pulled out a 68-67 at UVSC, upping their record to 12-13 and giving ISU some much needed momentum heading into their do-or-die weekend with Weber State and Eastern Washington starting this Saturday.
Utah Valley State (14-13) had a chance to tie the game after Abdul-Ahad hit two free throws with 5.6 left to make it a 66-63 ISU lead, but the Wolverines went for a quick two and got a Richard Troyer layup with 1.4 seconds left.
Ahad then hit two more free throws with 0.8 left, and UVSC's subsequent inbounds pass went right under the ISU basket, and UVSC layed it in with no time left to account for the final score.
Utah Valley State had been nearly invicible at home, going 24-2 over the past two seasons playing a full Division I schedule, and 37-2 over the past three seasons.
Slim Millien, who earlier in the first half set both the Idaho State and Big Sky single-season block records, hit a tough 7-footer in the lane to knot the game at 60-60 with 1:41 left. After a Wolverine miss and the 12th rebound of the night by Kasey Winters, David Schroeder hit a short jumper off the glass with 55.2 left to give the Bengals the lead for good at 62-60.
The Wolverines took their first lead at the 8:31 mark when Sylvester Allison converted a three-point play for a 46-44 after an ISU turnover, but David Schroeder answered just 15 seconds later with a three-pointer to give ISU the lead right back. From then the teams traded baskets and leads, as ISU twice fell behind by three only to have Tim Henry and Schroeder hit threes to knot the game at 58 just before the four minute mark.
Up 36-27, Idaho State had a chance to push the lead to a game-high 11 at the 16:00 mark of the second half, but Tim Henry, playing in his hometown for the first time since his freshman year at Salt Lake Community College, missed a dunk, and it led to UVSC's first three-pointer of the game on the other end and sparked a quick six-point run that brought the Wolverine's back into the game.
Idaho State played another solid first half, shooting .480 and limiting UVSC to just 9-of-30 shooting, including 0-for-8 from three-point range. ISU went up at the break 28-23 despite 13 first half turnovers.
NOTES: UVSC didn't score until a three-point play at the 15:40 mark ... ISU had four dunks, including two by Kasey Winters, and one by David Schroeder, both doubling their season totals ... Kasey Winters recorded his third double-double of the season ... UVSC outscored ISU 21-6 on points off turnovers ... the Bengals outrebounded the Wolverines 43-29.
