Pocatello, ID--Idaho State opened its season with a 1-0 loss to Utah State Friday evening at Davis Field in the debut of first-year head coach Allison Gibson.

"It felt great to get out there and get a game under our belts," Gibson said of her first career game at Idaho State. "We didn't have any preseason scrimmage games, so this was our scrimmage game tonight. We're at a good place and I'm happy with where the team is right now."

Idaho State came out strong in the first half, taking a 4-1 shot advantage into a 0-0 halftime tie.

"We had a lot of momentum going into the half," Gibson said. "I almost wished there wasn't a half because I think the break took away some of that momentum as was evident at the first part of the second period."

That lost momentum cost the Bengals as Utah State attacked with a goal in the 58th minute when Andra Hansen received a ball in the box and put it in the net about six yards out. Dana Peart and Charity Weston assisted on the score.

The Bengals then went on the offensive, just missing on numerous opportunities to score. Senior Chantal Kim led the way for ISU, notching a team-high three shots. Kilee Quigley had two shots with one on goal, while Jill Christofferson also had a shot on goal.

Jill Christofferson sees time in Friday's match against Utah State.

ISU recorded nine shots to Utah State's six, but lost the battle of shots on goal to the Aggies, 5-2.

Lyndsay Gensler played all 90 minutes for ISU in goal, recording four saves on the day. Gensler made multiple diving saves during the game to keep the Bengals close.

"We learned a lot from this game," Gibson said. "We're going to work on a couple of things in practice tomorrow and make some changes, and we'll incorporate them into the game on Sunday."

The Bengals will continue play at Davis Field on Sunday when the team hosts Southern Utah at 1 p.m.
