Pocatello, ID--Annamarie Hofstetter recorded a goal and four assists as Idaho State defeated Southern Utah 6-1 Sunday afternoon at Davis Field. Hofstetter's six points breaks the all-time ISU record for points in a single game, while her four assists breaks the all-time single game record for assists in a game.
"What a performance," said ISU head coach Allison Gibson said about her first career victory. "It was such a team effort. The team really came together, they implemented the things we had worked on in practice, and it paid off for us."
Chantal Kim scored ISU's first goal of the day in the 16th minute on a touch pass from Hofstetter. The score is Kim's sixth career goal and her first of the season. Hofstetter then got the Bengals a second goal in the 30th minute, breaking loose from a defender to free herself up for a shot that sailed over Southern Utah keeper Holly Davis and into the net from 30 yards out.
Idaho State then scored its third goal of the first half in the 43rd minute when Hofstetter sailed a corner kick into the box to an open Kilee Quigley, who headed the ball into the back of the net for her second career goal.
It was then more of the same for Idaho State in the second period as Michelle Okumura received a ball from Hofstetter and put it in the back of the net for the Bengals' fourth goal. The score came in the 57th minute. It was just three minutes after ISU's fifth goal that it scored its fifth when Quigley received a free kick from Hofstetter for her second goal of the contest.
Okumura scored her second goal of the game after breaking loose from a defender at the top of the box in the 65th minute to give Idaho State a 6-0 advantage.
"We really spread out the offense today," Gibson said. "We worked on opening up the offense yesterday and our team implemented it today. Our hard work in practice came to fruition today, and this win is a big stepping stone for us."
With their two goals Sunday, Quigley and Okumura become the 18th and 19th players in ISU history to score two goals in a single game. No ISU player has ever scored three goals in a single contest. Okumura also becomes the 10th player in ISU history to score two goals in a single half.
Hofstetter's two assists in each half tie the ISU all-time record for assists in a half.
"It feels awesome," Hofstetter said of her performance. "I just wanted to go out and do everything I could for our team. We really came together and it was a lot of fun. I wasn't focused at all on breaking the record because I didn't even know that I had broken the points record until they announced it."
With the six goals, Idaho State ties its all-time record for goals against a Division I opponent. The Bengals previously scored six goals in a 6-1 win over Southern Utah during the 2002 season and in a 6-2 win over Southern Utah during the 2003 season.
Southern Utah got on the scoreboard in the 68th minute after Cassidy Berlin punched in a shot after the ball got loose in the box.
Idaho State recorded 17 shots on the day, 10 on goal while limiting Southern Utah to just four shots with three on goal. ISU tallied 10 of its 17 shots in the first half. The Bengals received five corner kicks in the game compared to SUU's two.
Idaho State now heads out on the road for five straight games. The Bengals will travel to face Brigham Young on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. ISU will return home for a Sept. 22 matchup with Utah.
